MT ZION CEMETERY
NEAR JEFFERSON, CASS COUNTY, TEXAS
LOCATION: The cemetery is located by driving from the red light on
US Hwy 59 in Jefferson, Texas, north approximately 9 miles to FM
2683, then east approximately 1.6 miles. Turn right on a dirt
road. The church & cemetery are located at the end of this dirt
road about.4 mile. Also from Linden go US Hwy 59 south for 8.1
miles, turn on CR 2683 left for 1.6 mile. Turn on CR 1771 to
church & cemetery.
The land, 9 acres, for the church, school & cemetery was donated
by Isaac Lemmon & Felix G. Lemmon on 25-AUG-1851. They originally
acquired the land from the Republic of Texas in return for their
services during the war for Texas Independence. The church was
built of split hewn logs with a huge rock chimmey for heating. The
baptistry, called a pool in those days, was lined with split hewn
logs. The work being done by slaves under the supervision of their
masters. The pool, fed by a spring which has never been known to
go dry, is still used for baptisms. The cemetery is near by with
an adjoining plot for the slaves.
Cemetery was read 25-OCT-1995 by Melba Tims, Irene Powell, Gerald
Hammock, Jane Nunn, Charles Steger & Kathryn McAlexander. Reading
north to south starting in northwest corner.
Cemetery is known to be predominantly white.
