PRUITT CEMETERY
LINDEN, MARION COUNTY, TEXAS
LOCATION: On CR 2683 which connects Hwy 59 & FM248. About 2 miles
east of Mt. Zion Cemetery. Not used for many years, the cemetery
is barely accessible by means of a very dim, rough lane entered
through a pasture gate on the old homesite of Morris Jaynes. The
Jaynes house no longer stands. For further information ask the
Duncan family.
Pruitt Cemetery is located on what is now known as "Old Haggerty"
plantation just south of the Cass County line and about 2 l/2
miles east of Hwy 59. There is no road to this deserted old
cemetery and no evidence that it has been used since the date of
the last tombstone in 1864. It is said to have originally been
used as a burial ground for a tribe of wealthy Indians and may be
150 years old. Most of the stones have disappeared in recent years
and only a few remain.
There is a family connection of these Bryans and Bryans Mill of
the same county.
John H. McLean in his "Boyish Recollections of Jefferson, its
Vicinity and Folks" says that he came to this section in 1842.
. "Ours was about the first family to settle in the big woods north
of where Jefferson was later located. The following neighbors
settled in quick succession about us: Tom Kimble, Eli and William
Moore, the McAdoos, Simeon Rogers, Ellen Bryan, James Pruitt, Mrs.
Rebecca Haggerty, and the Willersons and Drews. In the Bend were
Flemming Jones and family, the Coopers, the Rives, Capt. Rose and
family, Col. Bob Potter and others." He names as his schoolmates
out of these families: " Jack, Bill, Nancy and Sarah Moore;
Columbus McAdoo; Will and Tol Pruitt; Clem Galloway; Anna Hawkins;
Kiametia Willerson and Sister; Bill and Jim Reeves; LaFayette
Rhea; Matt Graham; Ripley Rose; Tom, Cap and Jack Scott; Bill and
Mutt Crawford; Cas, John, Bill and Tom Bryan; Gus Durham; Louis
Todd; Jim and Joe Cutler; Jane Scott, John Wilson and a brother
and young Mr. McFarland."
Some of the unmarked graves may be those of Bryan children who
died about the same time as their father, W. O. Bryan. The
children were Mary Alice, Jane & James Harris. The mother's maiden
name was Mary Simmons (Simpson)? Harris.
This cemetery is known to be predominantly white
The oldest known grave:
MORGAN Mary Susan 1833 1852
